The recruiter message you never saw on LinkedIn
The most frustrating failure in a job search, because the hard part, getting found, already worked.
Of the things that go wrong in a job search, this is the one people find hardest to believe until it happens to them: a recruiter messaged you, and you never saw it.
Check this now
Open LinkedIn on desktop, go to Messaging, and look for a folder called "Message requests" or "Other", separate from your main inbox. If you have never opened it before, open it now.
- Messages from people you are not connected to, including recruiters who found you through search rather than sending InMail, often land here instead of your main inbox.
- LinkedIn's default notification settings do not always email you when a message request arrives, so it can sit there for weeks with nothing telling you it exists.
- If your messaging setting is narrower than "everyone", a recruiter who is not yet connected to you may not be able to message you at all.
Then fix the settings, not just the folder
In Settings & Privacy → Communications, turn on email notifications for messages. In Settings & Privacy → Visibility, check who can send you messages and connection requests: if it is narrower than you intended, widen it.
Then clear the Message requests folder itself: reply to anything real, and decline or delete the rest so it stops quietly accumulating.
A note on the address on your profile
If your account is tied to an email address you rarely open, none of the settings above will help, because the notification has nowhere useful to go. Check which address LinkedIn has on file, under Settings & Privacy → Account preferences, and update it if it is stale.
